We squeeee over a stunning rug, but ohmigosh they can be pricey. We spent literally days scrolling through blah rugs on Amazon and Wayfair until we found these. Swoonworthy? Check. Unique? Check. Well made? Check. And bonus, they look so much more expensive than they are.
We set out to find handmade rugs that fit both our design style and our budget. Here’s what we found.
Swoonworthy cheetah
Absolutely swoonworthy and it makes a statement. Most rugs on Amazon synthetic and machine made. Not these. They’re 100% wool, perfect for high traffic areas, and are handmade in India. As of the day we’re publishing this beauty in a 9×6 is under $500.
They come is several color choices (the pink is stunning!)
We’ve seen similar rugs on designer site for 10X the price
natural jute runner
This would be stunning anywhere, but we especially love it for a hallway. Not only is it handmade, but the jute fibers are handbraided by artisans near Jaipur, India. As of the day we’re publishing, the 14 ft runner is under $200.
If you’ve never owned a natural jute rug before, heads up. They’re natural fiber so being folded for shipping can cause them to crease. Just lay them flat and the creases will naturally go away over about the first week (quicker if there’s more humidity, more slowly if your home has very dry air).
flower power anyone?
This isn’t your grandma’s floral rug, but she’d love the hand-tufted worksmanship in 100% wool. We love wool for high traffic and their softness underfoot and (like our other picks today) this sexy beauty is handwoven in India. As of the time we’re posting, it’s under $600.
A note about handcrafted rugs – because they aren’t machine loomed and are made from natural fibers, colors can vary. To us, that’s the beauty of handmade. If you expect mass produced perfection, buy a mass produced polypropylene rug.
loving the leopard
Another handmade wool rug, this time with a leopard in a more traditional oushak motif. We love it! It’s 100% wool with a cotton backing to stand up to high traffic, and the price just can’t be beat. The 9×12 is under $600.
The blue is our fav but it also comes in tan and red.
Airy and casual Chindi Rug
The other direction, entirely, chindi rugs are lightweight and casual. They’re handmade in India of cotton rags (“chindi” literally means leftovers or rags in Hindi) They’re very similiar to the old American rag rugs. We love them for their softness and easy care, especially in a bedroom.
Like our rag rugs on this side of the world, Chindi rugs are very affordable. As of the time we’re posting, an 8×10 rug is just over $100. Love that!
